What is the Host Family in Sweden?

All you need to know about the program

Hosting an Au Pair in Sweden is a great opportunity for families to incorporate a rewarding cultural exchange into their everyday lives, where your family will be exposed to a different culture, language, and traditions.

Becoming a host family to an au pair is so much more than just choosing an affordable childcare option. Au pairs provide reliable live-in childcare. It is a chance for you as parents/guardians to have extra help, while keeping your children in the safety and comfort of your own home.

Au pairs can be hosted by any family (even single-parent families) if the family unit includes at least one child 18 years or younger. During the au pair stay, the au pair provides childcare and minor household duties to the host family. As part of the exchange, the host family provides free lodging and board to the au pair as well as pocket money. It is necessary for the host family to provide the au pair with a separate room in the house. As it is clear, the au pair does not join the family as household help but rather as a temporary family member who is interested in cultural exchange.

An important part of an au pair's stay is cultural exchange

An au pair stay aims to exchange cultural experiences between au pairs and host families as well as to support host families with childcare needs. The opportunity for au pairs to improve Swedish language is an important aspect of this exchange program. In order to assist their au pairs, families communicate with them in Swedish language or English. According to the program requirements, the Au Pair should learn or improve his/her Swedish. In order to make this possible, the Host Family must speak this language at home.
