Driving license

Find out information you will need to prepare for your driving in Sweden!

An international driving license is not explicitly required of au pairs. However, host families often look for au pairs who are able to drive. Many host families use their cars to run various errands and take their kids on activities. This requires the au pair also to have enough driving experience so that they can safely and confidently drive the children.

Thai Au Pairs who wish to drive in Sweden must obtain a International Driving License. There is a three-year validity period for the International Driving License, but it can be renewed.

Sweden drives on the right, while Thailand drives on the left. We strongly recommend that the Au Pair gets a chance to drive in Sweden for a couple of days before driving on the main road. Parking lots and low traffic roads are good examples.

It is important to discuss whether the Au Pair needs to drive and if he or she feels comfortable doing so. Discuss what will happen in the event of an accident as well? Who is responsible for the damage? Putting this agreement in writing is recommended for your own protection.
