Board and Lodging

Accommodation and food

As a host family you have a variety of requirements and responsibilities. Aside from meals, Au pair wages, and insurance, you will need to accommodate the Au pair at your place.

Here are some specific requirements for the Au pair room:
au pairs are considered family members for a defined period of time, so they have their own rooms in their host families.
a room should be at least 9 square meters in size, lockable, and have a window.
a room should be furnished and heated.
au pair should be allowed free access to food and drink in the home, and meals should be shared.
in the event of illness, the Au pair is entitled to board and lodging.

Our advice would be ensure the room is ready before the Au pair arrives. Be sure the room is clean, bed sheets are provided, and furniture is present. Consider preparing some small gifts for your future Au pair as a way to break the ice. It is possible for your kids to draw or create something with their hands. For a lively and welcoming atmosphere, you can decorate with flowers in vases or add home flowers.

It is important to make the Au pair feel comfortable in your home because their room is their personal space. In this way, you can ensure that the Au pair has evething they need to accomplish their work and responsibilities.

Tickets for public transport (optional)

We recommend host families pay their Au pairs a monthly public transport ticket. If Au pairs need to take the bus, tram, or train to pick up the children from nursery or school, the host families will have to pay for the transportation. When there is no public transportation available, Au pairs should be allowed to use the family car or the host family drive he/she to their language courses, for example.

Telephone costs (optional)

We recommend host families cover the costs associated with a telephone. The reason for this is that we believe it is very important that the Au pair is safe at all times. When they've never been to a country before, this can cause some tension because the au pair has their own communication system.

However, Au pairs also have a responsibility toward the children. Whenever something happens or questions arise, an Au pair should be able to call, text, or Whatsapp. It gives the Au pair a great deal of security. The same goes for parents, since they want to be informed as soon as possible if something is happening.
