Increased minimum cash compensation for au pairs As of 3 October 2022, the minimum level of cash compensation for a person applying for a work permit to work as an au pair in Sweden will be raised.

Anyone hiring an au pair must provide food, accommodation, insurance and cash compensation for work performed. The Swedish Migration Agency has decided that the minimum level of cash compensation for an au pair is 10 percent of the price base amount. This means the level is now increased from SEK 3,500 to SEK 4,830. More information

The minimum monthly pay for au pairs in Sweden is SEK 4,830, this depends on the arrangements made between the host family and the au pair. It is important to note that au pairs in Sweden are required to pay taxes. As required by Swedish law, the au pair get 4,830 sek per month from the host family excluding tax. The tax amount depends on which city you live in.

The host family is responsible for paying the pocket money each month to an au pair. The money you receive from your pocket is not earned money. It is important that au pairs are not considered employees. As a part of their duties, the au pair helps with light household chores and takes care of the children for a maximum of 25 hours a week. Thus, the au pair has free time as well. It would be nice for the au pair to have some free time to go to the movies, to lunch, or to play sports in this free time. Money from your pocket can be used for this purpose.
